Global Friendships

A short while back, we had a bit of a panic when the blog went a.w.o.l for a while. Strange 403 ERROR messages meant that we couldn’t get in to write it, answer comments, or receive messages.

How reassuring it is, to have people around you who know what to do.

Twitter has proved to be a mighty tool when you want to find out “how to” do something. One tweet, and many people respond with a suggested solution. Short concise and to the point.

Even better, though, when you can call upon someone who can sort out the problem, at speed, efficiently, with no fuss and with the ultimate professional understanding. Continue Reading

Beautiful concept and marvelous execution. That’s how 3d should be used online. The pop up book sections are a delight.

Severndale Specialist School, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Our life is certainly varied.

What a joy, therefore, to spend the first of two days Severndale Specialist School, near Shrewsbury, in Shropshire.

Severndale is a Specialist School for Communication and Interaction. They cater for pupils aged two and a half to nineteen who have profound, severe or moderate learning difficulties.

We saw some remarkable minds, and imaginations, in action today. Powerful use of language. Creative juggling of ideas. Well developed senses of humour. Just a delightful bunch of sparky children, of all ages, throughout the school. Continue Reading

Safer Internet?

| February 8, 2010 | 3 Comments

Tuesday is Safer Internet Day in schools across the U.K.

We so desperately need to think, and act, on how we protect our young learners.

I am not sure that can be done only through blocking their access to content. We have a responsibility to teach careful, safe, effective surfing and general use of the internet and all of its wonderous resources and tools. We need to raise awareness of what the dangers are, how to deal with them or avoid them, but also to encourage creative, inventive and safe use of the positive aspects. If we leave children unaware of the potential, they will always only use the weaker, elements.

A recent article, from The Institute of Education, investigates the gap between the amount of technology available in homes, and not available in schools, and points out that children are often left “disappointed (but not downbeat)” by school ICT. Continue Reading
