SciMorph
Have you had a look at Scimorph yet? An interesting site, designed to encourage pupils in Years 6 and 7 to be inspired and excited by science.
This will capture some attention!
Scimorph uses ‘augmented reality’ technology to present Key Stage 2 science topics in a fun and interactive way to support teaching and learning both at home and in the classroom.
Print out the pattern, shown here, and this acts as a launch pad for Scimorph.
Scimorph himself is a simple 3D animated character who responds to interaction from users: you can take Scimorph through various activity areas which affect him in different ways, including exploring the effects of gravity. (Any links with Clippy, the animated irritant in MSOffice, are unintentional I am sure
)
The package has supporting material for parents and teachers which is available to download from the directgov website. (Follow the link and click on “Getting Started”)
I think there are is one thing to remember: We must consider guidance when encouraging children to use ANY application that needs access to web-cams.
However, with enhanced reality due to become more prevalent, it is well worth tackling this issue head on.
The possibilities are endless.
This is certainly a great resource to add a bit of Wow Factor to in-class science lessons.
There are two main areas covered:
- The Gravity Zone. Learn about the effects of gravity on different planets.
- The Bug Zone. where children can learn about the spread and effects of germs and infections.
Have fun!
