The International School of Geneva, Middle School, Day 1

Our third trip to The International School in Geneva, in Switzerland.

Our previous two visits saw us taking part in The Pollens Pedagogiques Conference, and a great few days working alongside the children and staff of the Lower School.

With colleagues and students from the middle school, our focus today was ‘Talk for Writing using virtual worlds’. And, though there were many languages being used in the room, what fantastic talk there was!

Three joyous explorations with three groups of really creative Year 8s, with nearly sixty of us in each. We will let you know about some of the fun we had in a few future posts.

The International School of Geneva (in French: Ecole Internationale de Genève), also known as “Ecolint”, has an interesting and illustrious history.

In 1920-1921 the League of Nations and the International Labour Office (ILO) establish their headquarters in Geneva with staff drawn from many countries.

There was the need for a school which would cater for students with a diversity of cultures and would prepare them for university education in their home countries.

So it was that in 1924 the International School of Geneva was founded, making Ecolint the oldest, and now largest, international school in the world.

The middle school is situated at La Grande Boissière campus, the original buildings from the earliest days of the school, and provides an education specifically tailored to the needs of children ages 9 to 13, both in terms of their learning and personal development.

With a tradition of active learning, the school promotes the acquisition of a growing independence in respect for others and diversity.

Indeed, many nationalities are represented at the school, and it feels like a very positive linguistic and cultural melting pot, where the languages ​​of instruction are French and English, but many other languages are used by the pupils and parents.

Students have the opportunity to attend a bilingual curriculum predominantly francophone (French-speaking bilingual program) or an English Language Program).

The school prides itself on being “a place of integration where we learn to seek challenges, as it is not only to learn but also “learning to learn”.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, which most English-speaking students at the school follow, and is used in schools all over the world, was created at the Grande Boissière campus.
