Brunswick Infant School, North Lakes Penrith Cluster ~ Cumbria

| October 22, 2012 | 4 Comments

Today we had the pleasure of spending the day at Brunswick Infant School for the FS and KS1 focus for the North Lakes Penrith Cluster. The day started with a morning of lessons with the Y2 pupils and their teachers, LSA’s and visiting colleagues from the cluster.

Then an afternoon exploring the ideas and much more. We ended the day with a 2 and 1/4 hour twilight!

The other schools joining us today included North Lakes School, High Hesket C of E School, St Catherine’s RC School, Beaconside C of E School, Morland Area CE School, Victoria Nursery and Infant School, Stainton C of E School, Nenthead Primary, Sacred Heart RC School and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Kells.

North Lakes Junior School and Brunswick Infant School share a catchment area on the west side of Penrith in Cumbria. The two schools work increasingly closely together for the benefit of their community on issues such as transition, assessment, teaching and learning and curriculum planning. As part of their growing collaboration they are spending two days, co hosting us in delivering training on Inspiring Writing using ICT.

Brunswick Infants is a friendly, family orientated school in the centre of Penrith. The school has over 160 pupils and caters for children aged 3-7yrs. Brunswick’s talented team of staff work extremely hard, delivering a child-centered, personalised curriculum based around the needs of their pupils. The school is passionate about enquiry based learning, providing practical opportunities for pupils to apply their skills both indoors and outdoors.

Head teacher, Sharon Sanderson, says: “Pupils make good progress in writing as they move through the school, yet we are still keen to increase the percentage of pupils who achieve the very highest levels of attainment. In recent years the school has benefited from ICT investment and with Tim’s help we are hoping to inspire our current Y2 cohort of 43 pupils with a range of new writing stimuli”.

A huge THANK YOU to Sharon, Pierre (more to follow) their colleagues, children and visiting friends, for a joyous, full-on day of exploring, experimenting and FUN!

25/10/12 Thank you to Sharon, for sending her comments, thoughts, on the day:

A huge thank-you to Mike for bringing Tim & Sarah to Penrith. Brunswick staff have been really inspired by the endless ideas and suggestions to develop pupils writing. We have been working hard in recent years to develop pupils creative thinking and descriptive vocabulary. The Myst software provides us with a new resource to take this a stage further.
My favorite memory from the day has to be going over to a child to actually ask him to stop writing as the session was over……knowing this child’s normal reluctance I think it illustrated the impact of Tim’s teaching beautifully.
Thanks again.

Sharon

Thank YOU so much Sharon
As head, you have every right to be proud of your colleagues, and children, for what they have achieved already
It was a very special visit for us too
We thoroughly enjoyed getting the chance to have a look around your classes. What a delight to see a Year 2 class, with all the delightful ethos of a foundation stage room, but with very obvious movement forward and progression.
We hope we can keep in touch and find out what “next steps” you all take

Tim and Sarah

Very enjoyable day. Tim and sarah gave me lots of great ideas which I will attempt to implement into my own lessons throughout the year.

I was really surprised to see how the Myst III game enganged every child (and adult) regardless of their background or ability.

    Thank you

  2. Thanks Tim and Sarah for a packed day full of ideas, inspiration and suggestions. Well done to the Brunswick Year 2s who gave a great response to Tim this morning. We are looking forward to hosting you tomorrow at North Lakes!
