Roseberry Primary, Stockton-on-Tees ~ Day 2

| March 6, 2013 | 4 Comments

Our second day at Roseberry Primary, Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees, and what fun we had! This time, we were over with the Key Stage 1 section of the school, and did a bit of wonderful word wittering with two classes of Year 2 voyagers.

With many classes, of older children, we have been swept away by some gorgeous writing, and reading of that writing, done in spontaneous ways. To set up “a trickle of sharing”, with Year 2s, was a joy, and a challenge, and they rose to that challenge with great, increasing, confidence and style.

To set up a desire to read, and build understanding that it will be “OK”, we encouraged them to pick just one part.

“It may not be EVERYTHING, and it may not even be your best bit. We’ll know you may have written more, and that it might be even better than the bit you have read”.

In this, and other ways, the aim is to get children past the feeling that their contribution might not be “up to the mark”.

“There is no “right idea”. Even better, there is no “wrong idea”. You idea is, hopefully, different to others, and they’re ALL, potentially, “right”.

One child began reading a little piece of their writing, here today, then another, followed by another and so on. Admirable confidence, sometimes from those who might not have considered themselves, “up for it”, yet dripped some gorgeous ideas in to the flow that developed around the room.

Sharing spontaneously, needs to be demonstrated, and developed, and that ethos, of expanding confidence in inventive ways, is something that the school has built in to their learning in special ways. The staff, and children, of Roseberry value the power of talking, and how that can feed in to some stylish writing.

A massive THANK YOU to Maggie Fearnley, her lovely colleagues, and the children of Roseberry, for a very special couple of days. Joyous.

Today our year twos were excited, engaged and eager to explore a mystical place and so were we! Lots of ideas inspired us and we will take these into our classroom to extend out children’s learning.
A fantastic couple of days enjoyed by children and adults alike.

I had a great time over the last two days just watching and listening to you both. I have come away with some great ideas and can’t wait to try out some of the things you have shown me, both with my class and my children at home. I have been inspired. The only disappointment for me is that there aren’t more hours in the day to explore everything!
