Grimes Dyke Primary School, Leeds ~ Day 2

| November 19, 2013 | 3 Comments

The second of our two days at Grimes Dyke Primary School, here in Leeds and today, in contrast to yesterday’s INSET, we appear gloriously analogue. When we say “analogue”, we were actually using digital landscapes that so beautifully bring imaginary worlds in to the classroom, freeing and stimulating imaginations, talk, word play and writing in children and adults alike.

The morning with the KS2 pupils and their teaching staff and visiting colleagues from neighbouring schools, exploring the ‘hooks’, ‘nooks’ and ‘crannies’ that engage pupils in sharing their ideas with confidence and style.

And an afternoon with the KS1 pupils and teachers adventuring through their creations, notions and persuasions, as we wondered through caves, climbed trees and became intrepid explorers.

A really valuable part of a day like this is the opportunity to pick-apart what happened, to think about the ‘what would you do?’, ‘what would you not do?’, ‘what worked?’, ‘what didn’t work?’. We discussed, the importance of modelling writing, (rather than slip in to “Hover Mode”, gliding, almost ominiously, around above them); that making mistakes is OK; how difficult, but essentially valuable, it is to take our time as often as possible;

    Another amazing day with Tim and Sarah but this time involving the younger members of Team GD in the experience. It was wonderful to see the children utterly immersed in their writing but also to take part as a teacher – how often do teachers write alongside the children? We did today! We will certainly be keeping in touch with Tim and Sarah and sharing with them the next stage of our learning journey.

  2. Tim says:

    Thank you Louise
    As head, you should feel VERY proud of your school and colleagues, and, even more than that… of your children.
    They were stars today
    The sense of fun, humour, and inventiveness that flowed through the sessions, mad our sessions SO enjoyable
    Well done all, and THANK YOU

    Gosh, I’m exhausted, but in a very positive way! The two days with Tim and Sarah achieved everything I’d hoped for and more. Thank you to both of you, you left Team GD buzzing with excitement and raring to give it a go. I can’t wait!
