New Milton Infant School, Hampshire ~ Day 1

| January 20, 2014 | 3 Comments

Today we have the pleasure to be at New Milton Infant School, Hampshire, for a whole school INSET day. New Milton is clearly a busy, and friendly school, with lots going on. The school is blessed to be situated on the south coast, with both the seaside and the New Forest right on its doorstep!

Thank you to the school’s previous headteacher, Claire Skerrett, for the initial invite and to Kate Stanton, the school’s now Acting Headteacher for rising to all the challenges. Working alongside schools, we share, & demonstrate, the powerful effect of using games, useful Web2 tools & software (most of it free), hand-held devices & more, – modelling a way of teaching, where quality learning is the focus rather than the latest gadget; ‘what is said, rather than what is used to say it’.

One of the things we do is to investigate how virtual worlds, with their stunning landscapes, peaceful characters and realistic challenges, can be used across subject areas, abilities and age ranges, with remarkable effects: developing speaking, listening and writing abilities and raising confidences and self-esteem. In the end, it is about communication, rather the tool used to say it.

Technology should support the experiences children have, not replace them, – there can be no replacement for the doing when some have a paucity of experience from which to draw, – technology, combined with the sensory experiences that we help to supply, can help them on the journey to developing the basic skills of oracy and to using their ‘scribbly sticks’, or digital tools, with increasing confidence and effectiveness.

Well done indeed, to everybody today, for whizzing along with us through so many opportunities, and considering how they might help take learning even further than the remarkable things this school is already doing. Thanks all.
