Victoria Junior School, Workington, Cumbria ~ Day 2

| January 28, 2014 | 11 Comments

Our second day at Victoria Junior School, Workington, and headteacher Pauline Robertson has organised an inventive training day, creating an INSET while the children are still in school ~ powerful learning taking place everywhere.

This is a school that enjoys some imaginative learning in different forms. Pauline shared these thoughts:

Allowing children to explore the world of “creativity” guides them to places in which imagination can grow, aspirations can be raised and self-confidence enables them to explore the potential of the world around them.

Creating an innovative environment for learning has been a priority of our school since 2010. Developing an “Outstanding Reading Culture” has been achieved through innovative use of Ipads, promoting blogging and online reading along with an increased use of newspapers and skilfully using the “power of reading” strategies to promote a love of literature and knowledge. Outstanding progress in reading and writing has resulted in the school being awarded UKLA “Literacy School of the Year 2014”

We have chosen to launch our award year 2014 with the innovative support of Tim Rylands, whose reputation for stimulating creative opportunities for writing will contribute to this year’s school improvement focus on writing. The key skills of writing have been embedded through the use of Assertive Mentoring however combined with Tim’s innovative use of technology we hope to enhance and support the school’s commitment of providing our pupils with quality meaningful opportunities to extend and improve writing.

The teachers at Victoria have directed and guided our pupil’s to achieve good progress in writing through improved teaching of basic writing skills however we want and expect more for our pupils. I know that Tim has the skills to move teachers outside the box in their thinking and move towards embedding in their everyday teaching and learning stimulating and creative opportunities.

I challenge teachers to embrace the work of Tim and through this learning opportunity embed into the daily work of the school the methodology and strategies that have demonstrated innovative results.

Children deserve no less than the best and this method of creative teaching and learning is the best.

Well done, and thanks all, for a full on, fast paced whiz through just some of the ways to take things even further. Here’s to finding out what you try next. Nice one!
