Dominic’s devastatingly descriptive dry desert of doom!
Posted by: blog in Events and Training daysDear Tim
Having seen you talk at UWE, I thought I’d have a go at using your idea with my mixed Year 3/4 class during the Imaginary World unit. They loved it and so did I.
I was really delighted with the quality of work I got from them and am attaching a letter written to you by one of my class. I hope you enjoy his work.

Dear Mr. Rylands,
In February, my teacher, Mrs. Barrett, used the MYST computer game to help us with descriptive writing. Mrs. Barrett enjoyed mine so she said I should send you a copy, which is written below.
‘The first sight was breathtaking; the landscape was a rough terrain, magnificent in my eyes. I had never seen such a sight. It was as dry as an ancient Egyptian mummy dug up after thousands of years.
There, before me, stood mountains as jagged as the serrated edges of a knife, a ruby red tint dieing them.
There were sandy shades of orange and red
- to me they were tremendous!
I could taste the grit being blown into my open mouth, opened by the pure beauty of the sight. In places the mountains were craggy as if a huge dinosaur from years ago had taken a bite out of them.
It seemed like a planet; the planet closest to the sun, and the heat was beating down on my neck. Down below, cactus as sharp as needles, were growing. If I were to drop from the balcony, I would scold myself.
The wispy clouds looked faint and unreal. High in the sky, I noticed a lazy bird searching for its prey. I could hear a ghostly wind chime being blown by a gentle breath of wind. The breeze tickled my neck, making me shiver although it was scolding hot!
Down below there were loads of rocks, each as sharp as the other, they were scattered amongst the bushes, seeking water. Under layers of sand I could imagine bones, the remains of animals who have lived here before.’
I hope you enjoy reading this too,
Yours faithfully

Well done indeed Dominic! I am sure that everyone who reads this will agree with me, you really conjure up a striking image of the landscape you were standing in. Powerful stuff. I will be on the lookout for your first novel.
